Yes, the old requirement about the priesthood was set aside because it was weak and useless. For the law never made anything perfect. But now we have confidence in a better hope, through which we draw near to God.
The law revealed to humankind our sin, but it could not change us. After we fell and “obtained” the knowledge of good and evil, sin continued to increase more and more. While there were glimmers of hope and repentance throughout the story of the Bible, humankind always fell short of the glory of God. The truth is that we could not hope to restore ourselves to the Lord. We would always fall short of realizing relationship with God without help. We needed a uniquely qualified High Priest, One that could do what the law could not. Jesus Christ is “our better hope, through which we draw near to God”. He not only became a sacrifice “once and for all” to atone for our sin, but He also granted us the gift of the Holy Spirit. He is able to continually lead us in our daily lives so that we may remain in Christ. Jesus is THE way to God.
